EMEK
interviewed in the TIMES of England: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,22875-2172087.html
Emek, a poster artist and
co-founder of the Post Neo Explosionists, a
design collective credited with spearheading
the gig-poster revival, also sees the explosion
in activity as a reaction to modern life. “We live in a disposable culture,”
he argues. “Our images have to compete
against the over-stimuli of mass production and
products. I like to think we slow it down a bit.”
Billing himself as the “thinking man’s
poster artist”, Emek mixes classic rock
iconography with anatomical and religious imagery,
influenced by everything from Russian Constructivism
to Asian woodblock. A recent poster for Erykah
Badu features a clenched black power fist, tattooed
in symbols, with Badu’s face staring out
from the bottom (right). Badu also used the image
on tour. It’s not hard to see why: the
work, powerful in itself, also leads you directly
back to an era when rock music was still radical.
EMEK
featured in a new College textbook: "A Social
History of Rock and Roll: Rockin In Time"
by David Szatmary 6th edition features many classic
emek posters in it. For college courses in Rock
and Roll Music History, Recent American History,
American Sociology, and African-American History.
Rockin'
in Time provides a social history of Rock and
Roll music by explaining its influence. The
book was written to address an area that
seldom has been discussed. Rather than a
compellation of the many bands in rock history
or a guide to teach the musical notation of rock,
this book uncovers the reasons for the various
trends and types of rock and roll. It places
rock and roll in the context of the social issues
that surround and shape it, dealing with the
influence on rock music of such trends as technological
advances, the development of the music business,
demographic change and the baby boom, economic
shifts, and the civil rights movement.

With
the completion of the QOTSA/PNE series very near,
PNE is pleased to announce an all new series by
another band. For those of you who may not know,
PNE stands for 'POST NEO EXPLOSIONISM'...which
is a periodic artistic collaboration between 3
established poster artists: Justin Hampton, Jermaine
Rogers, and EMEK.
But now, we'll discuss the new project: AUDIOSLAVE.
The rock-and-roll band featuring Chris Cornell
(Soundgarden) and three members of the now defunct
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE first approached PNE
in the winter of 2004. After several meetings,
the band commisioned us to create official concert
poster artwork for their upcoming North American
tour, slated to begin in Las Vegas on April 14,
2005. We welcome the oppurtunity to work with
AUDIOSLAVE and hope that fans of the band and
poster collectors alike will dig the work that
we have created for the tour. As with the QOTSA
and BUILT TO SPILL series, we will be creating
a seperate poster for each show of their 21 date
tour.
This time around, we wanted to try something a
bit different. We've had guest artists before
on these series. These guests have typically been
assigned one date with which to work...and we've
gotten AMAZING posters working in this way.
This time, we wanted to work more closely with
a 'guest' artist....allowing them several dates...as
many as Hampton, EMEK, and myself usually get.
That way, our 'guest' could serve as a full partner
in the series...and we think that the work will
be more intense and involved.
We are glad to welcome our 'guest artist', Jeff
Wood (DROWNING CREEK), to this series. Jeff will
be creating several posters for this series and
we are all looking forward to seeing a master
at work.
One more surprise.
Mark your calenders for the May 16th Sacramento
date.
We have ONE MORE guest artist for this series...he'll
only be doing ONE DATE. You will NEVER GUESS who
it is. But know this....it's someone we're all
very glad to work with. This surprise guest-artists
poster is without a doubt THE poster all of us
in PNE (and Jeff) are looking forward to. Stay
tuned.
Yes,
its true! PNE has re-grouped for several new projects.
For those of you who may not know, PNE stands
for 'POST NEO EXPLOSIONISM'...which is a periodic
artistic collaboration between 3 established poster
artists: Justin Hampton, Jermaine Rogers, and
EMEK. For now, we'll discuss the first project:
many of you remember the QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
series? PNE was commisioned to create a series
of concert posters for the band's 2003 North American
tour. Between the 3 members of PNE, a seperate
limited-edition poster was created for each and
every one of the 26 shows. Well, QOTSA has hired
us again. We will be creating official concert
posters for their upcoming North American tour,
slated to begin in Austin on March 15th, 2005.
These posters will be used in official promotion
before the show and in merch sales at the show.
In order to throw a new wrinkle in the project
this time around and not tread the same old ground,
we talked to the Queens about doing something
a bit different. The upcoming QOTSA album is full
of 'guest talent' (you all will LOVE it). The
3 of us thought about it, and felt that the series
should reflect that same spirit. So, we sought
out a group of artists that we felt would provide
a dynamic infusion of hardcore talent and creativity
and they have been given various posters throughout
the run. We let QOTSA know what we wanted to do,
and they are behind us 100%. In this way, we think
we will get a pretty amazing series in the end...plus,
the series will show a variety of talent from
different areas of the poster world. We've chosen
7 guest artists. More news soon.
